What Is Endodontics?

Endodontics is a medicine field derived from the words endo (in) and odont (tooth). In Endodontics, which is performed to treat the inside of the teeth, the most basic goal is to save the tooth. Instead of attracting a diseased or damaged tooth, an endodontic specialist cleans up caries and infection to prevent further damage to the tooth. Root canal treatment is the most well-known treatment among endodontics.

In What Cases Is Endodontics Applied?

Root canal treatment is not a method that can be applied in all cases. Therefore, we can explain in which cases root canal treatment is applicable as follows.

  • In the treatment of caries, where there are more solid places of the tooth,
  • Cracked teeth,
  • Dentures and bridge teeth,
  • In cases where deep caries occurs on the teeth, the canal treatment method can be easily applied.

How Is Root Canal Treatment Performed?

Root canal treatment is a dental treatment in which damage to the tooth is eliminated at certain Sessions intervals. In this method, the most crucial element is to regularly go to the sessions and not leave the session halfway. In the canal treatment, a hole is made primarily from the back part of the front tooth or the crown of the small molars. If the tooth’s diseased area is removed, the pulp cavity occurs, and the root canals are cleaned and expanded through this cavity. Then the tooth is shaped for canal filling. If the procedure lasts for several sessions, the filling process is performed to avoid the pain. Pain occurs the first time the procedure is performed. For these pains, painkillers should be used.

In the next canal treatment session, the filling is removed, and the pulp cavity is filled with canal filling. A material called Güta perka is inserted into the channels and glued to their places with an adhesive. In some cases, a plastic or metal rod may be placed to provide structural support. Finally, to achieve a natural appearance, Crown coating is performed on it. If the tooth is broken, the tooth must be repaired before the crown is placed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Root canal treatment is a life-long procedure. But if dental care cannot be performed correctly, or if the filling falls, it is necessary to apply root canal treatment again.

During canal treatment, local anesthesia is applied to the area where the tooth is located. For this reason, the patient does not feel any pain during the operation. But after the effect of anesthesia passes, pain occurs.

In the canal treatment, the session varies depending on the state of damage to the tooth. In some cases, treatment can also end in a single session. In cases such as when the tooth is inflamed, the inflammation must first be cleaned, and then the process must continue.
